I love photography. I love travelling. So this is something in the middle. I also post thinks that i think that are interesting for me !!! Additionally not hesitate to send me everything you think that it fits in this blog.
As i was searching last week about the most used words os social media i found that there is a project about the Word of the year. I searched in Wikipedia and i found that not only Oxford Dictionaries have this feature but Global Language Monitor finds the Top Words and Phrases for each year instead for only a word.
We are in the last month of 2013 so i will try to remember some mayor things that happened this year as i am scanning the Top Words of 2013 that announced one month earlier.
Firstly let’s take the Top words. You can find them in wikipedia article. I am going to focus only on the ones that i think that mean something to me.
So as you scan you can first find the word 404 (in the internet is the code of failure) and below the word fail. Two words describing the same thing. Almost everything around us is fails. The political systems around the world ? Economy and people that are behind it ? Almost everything.
After them you can also find that it is an economic term. Deficit. You can find the world debt in this incredible page of Economist. As you can see the worlds debt is 52.138 thrillion dollars. We live in a world of debt and deficits are everywhere. But no one seems to care about it.
Then there are a bit more words about technology. The cloud, Drones, Nano-, Hashtag, @pontifex. It seems that technology rises very fast. Even the Pope has his personal twitter account (last word) and of course hashtag. Everything that happens has his own hashtag. I saw many photos of the latest TEDxAthens. Everywhere you can see their hashtag. Of course this is very helpfull because you can find all the related post or tweets in a place in order the information flow better. And in a TEDx event this is vital. Of course cloud companies saved our lifes because i have all of my important things on Dropbox. I can access them everywhere and they are safe if my PC have a problem so everything would lost from my disc.
Now let’s see the Top Phrases of 2013. Federal Shutdown and Federal Deficit. Yes i think that in all of the themed books and magazines that will look back in 2013 this will be the biggest moment. It was the biggest moment in this year because we saw that the system that we think that is stable it isn’t after all because we are governed by some people that they don;t think rational.
Then you come up with the phrases Marathon Bombing in Boston. It is one of the top moments in America’s history after September 11. Then two words, Chemical Weapons and Arab Spring, that are on the media’s focus in the last years. Arab countries are on fire and no one knows where this is going to end.
After all these you can find common words like Climate Change and Global Warming an Toxic Politics. All these words in the lst couple of years are inside every thing that you read or see. Toxic bonds. The planet is going to be unlivable because of the high temperature. We are used to live with this words after all.
So let’s see what is going to happen in the last month of this interesting year !!!
One of the main things i love is Red Wine. Not in a big quantity but a great quality. So here is few infographics that i found about wine. The first icon is the way that an accountant or economist sees the wine ( it’s a kind the way i do because i study economics :P ).
The second picture is some statistics about who’s drinking wine and who’s drinking beer (the second thing that contains alchohol and i love).
This interesting research took place in Argentina (Museum of Contemporary Art, Buenos Aires). For many years we think that chewing gum is bad for us and that kids mustn’t use for a long time. This example shows us that we are a bit wrong. Maybe Trident should do this video one of it’s advertisements.
Yesterday i read an article about relationships. The interesting fact here is that scientist are using facebook as the filed of their research. They used facebook accounts and relationship status from 1.3 million users between 20 and 50 years old that they have no more than 2000 friends. The goal is to find the spouse or the one that means many things for you..
“A spouse or romantic partner is a bridge between a person’s different social worlds,” Mr. Kleinberg explained in an interview.
Their dispersion algorithm was able to correctly identify a user’s spouse 60 percent of the time, or better than a 1-in-2 chance. Since everyone in the sample had at least 50 friends, merely guessing would have at best produced a 1 in 50 chance. The algorithm also did pretty well with people who declare themselves to be “in a relationship,” correctly identifying them a third of the time — a 1 in 3 chance compared with the 1 in 50 for guesswork.
But you can find many other interesting things in the study. For example particularly intriguing is that when the algorithm fails, it looks as if the relationship is in trouble. A couple in a declared relationship and without a high dispersion on the site are 50 percent more likely to break up over the next two months than a couple with a high dispersion, the researchers found. (Their research tracked the users every two months for two years.)
Additionally while i was looking in the above table i found interesting the fact that as you can see the propability that as we see one users network graph we can intentify his or her spouse more times when the user is male and we search on statistics based on how many photos are together tagged (photo column) or on the times that this user checked his spouse profile in the last 90 days. What someone might think ?
Additionally something that we already know is that more facebook users have “in a relationship” or “married” than “engaged” status.
You can read the whole study here.
For those who know me very well they know that one thing that is my favourite is the Starbucks store here in Thessaloniki, near the city’s landmark the White Tower. I love the place. It is the kind of coffee shop that embraces you to read and do work not only drink coffee and chat with friends and colleagues. I usually take a cup of coffee and i drink it while i am working on projects and i do college’s studies. Yes it’s fun and there is quiet because many of the customers go there for the same reason. There are not many coffee shops like this. (I found a new one called iHeart in Thessaloniki that’s good for reading but i haven’t visited it yet).
So i read an article about a starbucks shop in a train that happens in Switzerland. Is that great ? A dream. “It’s part of an international Starbucks strategy to try and meet its consumers on a whole new level in the wake of some hard years.” I hope one day i will visit this country that i love so much or OSE (Greece’s main network operator) will sign a contract like this with Starbucks and not with Everest (now the main contractor about shops inside OSE’s trains).
Going for a short trip with my dad and one of his friends realized that the winter is coming. I also wondered having a National Geographic magazine issue with me why we read about other countries beauties and we don’t search the beayty inside our country ? Is it so difficult ? Why any magazine that specializes in Greece natural beauty haven’t ever succeed ? Food for thought greeks.
Fewer people write these days but there’s still a need to jot down ideas, express how you feel or record deep thoughts. Of course there is the email inbox for all these but pencil gives you a richer experience. As you can understand today i am going to explore some great things about pencils. An everyday object but you have to stop and read some things about it. As in my latest TEDx event we gave pencils to all of our attendes i heard one of our speakers saying that he only uses pencil in his daily life. Additionally when i returned home i found my sister using this pencil decorated by our volunteers. After i entered to college i started using only pen for anything that i wish to write. So few days after our event i started using pencil for almost anything and i was curious about this object. I had the idea of making a “thank you” post in our page for our volunteers that worked hard to make all this pencils beautifull so I searched the internet and i am going to present you some of this great information and videos.
To start with pencils founded in 1565 and used extensively by the Romans. Whes but what is this thing after all ? Here’s is a great 6’ minute video to learn about it.
So after all this you don’t think that a pencil is just a piece of wood and two other things. ”No single person on the face of the earth can make a pencil without the help of countless others” as the video says. It is one of the most important things in humans history. It used for various reasons and one of them is a great advertisement by who else, Apple for their latest Ipad. See it and you will understand that pencil is not an oldfashioned object that only children in school use but an everyday life object that must be in everyones pockets (the advertisement says that the ipad must take the pencils position but i totally disagree with this so lets continue :P )
Great isn’t it ? But let’s see some other behind the scenes things. As everyday things pencil is used for many reasons. Some os us use pencil for their work. As you can easily find in Wikipedia many great people through the history, especially writers, used pencils in order to finish their books. Examples are Thomas Edison had his pencils specially made by Eagle Pencil. John Steinbeck was an obsessive pencil user and is said to have used as many as 60 a day. His novel East of Eden took more than 300 pencils to write. Vincent van Gogh used only Faber pencils as they were “superior to Carpenters pencils, a capital black and most agreeable”. Finally Roald Dahl used only pencils with yellow casing to write his books. He had 6 sharpened pencils ready at the beginning of each day and only when all 6 pencils became unusable did he resharpen them (if you think that this is an easy job it’s worth to see this). Additionally there is art with pencils like the photo above that someone used 12.000 pencils.
For others it’s for the time of the day that they get bored. But it’s not so bad after all.
Closing i want to share with you some interesting facts about pencils. Read them and you will find yourself thinking more about using a pencil the next time that you are going to write something i a piece of paper. Until then bye !!!
